The third issue of Cars Illustrated showed the focused editorial direction at work. New and old, bright red Camaros doing burnouts sold well on the magazine rack in 1985. Placing new Detroit-built cars on the cover, and then taking them street racing to see how they would fair in an actual street race, would be the theme of the next several issues of Cars Illustrated. It’s an editorial strategy that had worked in the ‘60s, but had never been attempted again until Cars Illustrated was published in the ‘80s.
